Hello HCPBA members,
The window for winter season prescribed burns here in Humboldt certainly has been opened wide recently. For those of you who want to get in on the action, there are several upcoming burn that are currently being planned.
This Friday, Feb. 11th the Seely Creek Burn is planned in the Briceland area. It is a project of approximately 25 acres of meadow and oak forest on the border of the Seely Creek and Salmon Creek watersheds. There will be no minimum training requirements to attend, but guests should bring sturdy boots, denim pants, long sleeve cotton shirts, and leather gloves if they intend to participate. Participating volunteer fire department members and others with access to additional PPE such as Nomex clothing, helmets, fire shelters, etc. will be expected to make full use of their safety equipment. An ICS command structure will be used, out of local VFD habit and for training purposes. Food and drink will be provided and guest are also welcome to bring food to share. Sorry for the last minute notification on this one! Contact is myself (Camilo Stevenson) milocascadia@gmail.com or text to 707-814-5258.
On Tuesday, Feb. 15th near Honeydew on the Stansberry Ranch, the Buckeye Ridge Rx Burn is planned to begin. Alternate dates if postponement is necessary are Feb. 19th or 20th. This a large project with 100+ acres of mostly mixed conifer and oak understory with some grassland being organized with the assistance of CalFire, the Mattole Restoration Council and local VFDs. The organizers ask that the number of PBA members be limited to 10-12. Contact for more information; Laura Lalemand llalemand@savetheredwoods.org.
This Saturday, Feb. 19th plans are to continue burning the Oak Knoll project above Garberville, a large mixed vegetation unit near Upper Sawmill Loop that has been partially burned over several work days in the past two weeks. Gina Paine is the contact to get involved with this project, thepaines05@gmail.com
Increased interest in prescribed burning in our area will likely mean more updates in the near future as more projects become ready to go. We hope to see this important tool continue its return to our California landscapes. Thank you for being involved!
Warmly,
